The dispute between Governor Godwin Obaseki and his estranged deputy PHILIP SHUAIBU, have been adjudged as the root cause behind the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC’s) candidate, Sen. Monday Okpebholo at the just concluded governorship election in Edo state
This was the position of the Director of University of Ilorin Affiliates, at the Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, DR. HADI MOSHOOD, while featuring live on Diamond FM’s flagship program -“the Diamond Breakfast Show” today (Monday, 23rd September, 2024).
According to him the electoral system in the country needs to be changed as it is part of the issue affecting governance and democracy generally in Nigeria.
“if this bad system could be changed then maybe election process can be free and fair in Nigeria” he added
While responding on the just concluded kwara local government polls, DR. Hadi, blamed governors for controlling the electoral umpires in their individual state, Kwara inclusive
The Governors wants to turn the state they are ruling to a one party stat, if it is a PDP state you carry all local council seats, if it a APC state, You carry all as well. It has happened in Oyo, Gombe” said Dr. Hadi
He also charged the newly elected local government chairmen to be responsible stewards of public funds, given their closeness to the people, stressing on the importance of accountability, transparency, and good governance.
Recall that the APC claimed victory in 13 out of the 18 local government areas (LGA) of Edo State, with Sen. Okpebholo polling 291,667 votes to defeat PDP’s Asue Ighodalo, who came second with 247,274 votes, and Labour Party’s Olumide Akpata, who emerged third with 22,763 votes. While APC also clinched all 16 chairmanship seats and 193 councillorship positions across Kwara state at the just concluded LGA election.
