A kwara based public affair analyst and social commentator, Comrade Joel Afolayan, has warned that the proposed 250% electricity tariff hike would have a devastating impact on the nation’s manufacturing sector.
He stated this in an interview on diamond fm’s Breakfast Show on Tuesday, 15 October. Comrade Afolayan emphasized that the hike would increase production costs, rendering local goods globally uncompetitive.
“The proposed tariff hike is unacceptable and would lead to factory closures, job losses, and decreased economic activity, “comrade Afolayan stressed.
He urged the government to explore alternative revenue generation sources, rather than burdening manufacturers with excessive costs.
Comrade Afolayan also called for policies that promote local content, affordable financing, and infrastructure development to support manufacturers.
“This tariff hike will undermine Nigeria’s economic growth and competitiveness,” he warned.
The Federal Government has been urged to reconsider the proposed hike, with MAN and other stakeholders advocating for a more sustainable solution.
