Industrial revolution and the rapid growth of industrialization have caused serious threats to the development of both developed and developing countries. While modern industries extract various natural resources, raw materials and energy from the environment to produce material goods and services, such uses and production processes have resulted in large scale discharge of wastes into the environment causing severe threats to agricultural practices, suppressing the values of rural and urban property and reducing the quality of human life. Although most of the developed countries had responded to this issue by creating various technological, economic and legal system for regulating the polluting behavior of firms, the developing countries, on the other hand, have not achieved sufficient progress in controlling industrial pollution and its influences on their economy and society due to lack of technological alternatives, failures of markets, institutions, government policies, mass poverty and illiteracy.
A residential area is a land use in which housing predominates, as opposed to industrial and commercial areas. These include single-family housing, multi-family residential, or mobile homes and Industrial properties are properties used for industrial purposes. Types of industrial property include factory-office multi use property; factory -warehouse multi use property; heavy manufacturing buildings; industrial parks; light manufacturing buildings; and research and development parks.
Living in an industrial area comes with its unique set of risks and challenges that can impact the health, safety and well-being of residents. From potential accidents to environmental pollution, the hazards associated with industrial zones pose a serious problem to not just lives but communities.
One of the most common dangers of living in an industrial area is exposure to environmental pollution. Industrial activities like; refining and processing often release pollutants into the air, water and soil. Air Pollution, most especially, can result from emissions of harmful gases, Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) and particulate matter from factories and even vehicles. These pollutants contribute to respiratory illness, cardiovascular diseases and other chronic health related illnesses among residents. Also, industrial discharges can contaminate water sources, causing risks to both human health and ecosystems. Soil Pollution from chemical spills can further worsen and impact agricultural productivity.
Another risk of living in close proximity to factories is the health and safety risks. Industrial accidents like; chemical spills, fires, explosions and equipment malfunctions can happen without warning, putting lives and properties in danger. Exposure to hazardous substances released during these incidents can lead to skin irritation, respiratory distress, chemical burns. to mention a few. The long-term health implications of terrible exposure to industrial pollutants are of significant concern for residents living within industrial zones. The noise and vibration generated by industrial operations can interrupt sleep, increase stress level and impact overall quality of life of residents negatively.
Addressing these negative effects requires a complex approach that requires an engagement and sustainable urban planning from both government and communities. Robust environment enforcement is essential for monitoring industrial emissions, controlling pollution and ensuring compliance with health and safety standards. Community involvement can facilitate dialogue between residents, industry stakeholders and government officials to address concerns, seek protective and mitigation measures. Urban planning initiatives that prioritize green spaces, pedestrian-friendly facilities can help create healthier communities.
In conclusion, the risks of living in an industrial area highlights the importance of proactive measures to protect the health, safety and well-being of residents. By addressing all these risks, it is advisable that stakeholders work together to create healthier and more sustainable living environments. Through innovation and commitment to environmental justice, we can reduce the hazards of living in an industrial area and promote the health of citizens.
