A Public affairs analyst and social commentator, Doc Abiodun Yita, has stated emphatically that the presidential system of government has failed in all ramifications.
He made this assertion on Diamond Breakfast Show monitored by Praise Onu and Adedolapo Babatunde on Friday while making notable contributions on the bill passed by the House of Representatives.
Recall that a bill seeking to return the country to a parliamentary system of government passed its second reading on the floor of the House of Representatives yesterday.
In his statement, he stated that the content of the amendment in relation to the office of the prime minister will alter so much as far as the country is concerned, continuing that the issue of corruption has deepened because the government has failed to their work.
“This presidential system of government has failed us in all ramifications, it has entrenched corruption of the highest order. Now it is one of the highly expensive systems of government one can embark on. Imagine having a presidential system of government with the president whose office is most powerful as far as the country is concerned. Apart from the president, we have the vice president, the ministers in their numbers, which is for the national government, now moving to the sub-national government, the same thing repeats itself, multiplication of office holders for same functions”.
Also recall that the House of Representatives has reversed its earlier decision to advance a bill that would strip the Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors of constitutional immunity.
Speaking on this development, Doc Abiodun stated that the bill is a welcome development, revealing that lawmaking and bill proposals are the primary functions of the legislative arm.
“Lawmaking in terms of presentation of bill, introduction of bill, first reading, second reading, and public hearing are all legislative functions. So the number is immaterial as long as the motive of the bill is in our best interest. The issue of implementation or execution of the bill or even signing it to law is not their making but it is in the purview of the executive. It is a plus as far as our democratic system is concerned”.
However, he applauded the legislature for challenging the status quo as regards the removal of immunity adding that it is an impressive one.
