A public affairs commentator and lecturer at the Kwara state University, Dr Sulaiman Hafeez, has stated that the creation of state police in Nigeria is not enough to solve Nigeria’s security challenges, adding that the kind of state police the government have in mind will require community police.
He stated this while featuring on a current affairs and political program, the Diamond Breakfast Show on Diamond Fm Ilorin on Thursday, September 5, 2024.
Recall that, on Thursday, February 15th 2024, the National Executive Council asked all state governors to come up with a report on the state police framework implementation. However on Wednesday, 4th September 2024, after the National Executive Council meeting, it was resolved that failure to come up with its report will have to receive any imposition the council comes up with.
Meanwhile, reacting to the creation of state police, Dr. Sulaiman said the best and most preferable solution to the nation’s security is to create a community based police alongside the state police.
‘’Let me start with my opinion, I do not think the kind of state security the federal government is proposing will solve our problems. I am also of the opinion that creating state police will go a long way in solving some of our problems, but creating community police will increase security, for instance there are various categories of crimes, there are some offences that should be categorized, under the jurisdiction of federal government and some under the state’s jurisdiction so the states and communities police will work together in this case’’ said Dr. Sulaiman.
