Nigerians have been charged to be more proactive in the country’s electioneering process, as against the popular norm of observing from afar the process of emergence of leaders at local and national levels.
This was the position of the Director of University of Ilorin Affiliate, at Kwara State College of Education Ilorin, Dr. Hadi Moshood, while featuring live on today’s (Monday, 18th November,2024) Edition of the Diamond Breakfast Show- a flagship programme of Diamond88.7FM, Ilorin.
“Most of the elites just decide to turn on their televisions and start calculating results on television and deciding elections in which they’ve not participated, and this has been the attitude of the elites, I remember down in Kwara state here in days past like 10 years most people that go and vote then where old women and they go out massively amongst the elites.
It’s only recently that we have youths coming out now becoming the largest in population for voting but in the past it was the old women being the highest number of people that come out to vote most of the elites don’t come out to vote especially when there is light during elections, you’d see them watching election inside and be analyzing inside their room rather than going out to vote this are the kind of changes we are calling for because one of the greatest offence one can commit is for you not to go out and vote and then come back later to condemn whoever is elected”. Hadi. added
In his reaction, the renowned public affairs analyst strongly condemned voter apathy in Nigeria and advocated for its resolution for a better country.
While reacting to a statement by former president Olusegun Obasanjo, he emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s led administration should focus on the message. Dr. Hadi noted that constructive feedback from seasoned leaders should not be disregarded but viewed as a means to re-evaluate governance and drive national progress.
In his words: “What Baba has said is the sad description of what we are having in the country pervasive corruption and lack of competent leadership which had not even exonerated himself as a messenger because he was an elder stateman a two-time president on the kaki side and on the agbada side so he saw it all and knew what he was talking about, so when people like Obasanjo is talking we forget his face if you don’t like his face forget about him and leave the messenger but take his message and let us work on the message, all the thing he said, are they not happening? Are we not in chaos? Are we not having insecurity? Are we not having youth restiveness?
Recall that former president Olusegun Obasanjo in a statement issued over the weekend by his media aid KEHINDE ADEYEMI during his keynote address at the Chinua Achebe leadership program in Connecticut U.S.A, criticized Nigeria’s current state under Tinubu’s leadership, lamenting the nation’s struggle with corruption and mismanagement.
