A public affairs commentator and author in Ilorin, Comrade Abdulateef Ishowo has stated that, what determines the prices of goods and services in Nigeria is crude oil. He was reacting to the appeal by the Chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumers Protection Commission [FCCPC] to stakeholders in the production and distribution value chain of Nigeria’s economy to join the crusade in curb price fixing and other unethical practices.
He stated this while featuring on a political and current affairs programme, the Diamond Breakfast Show on Thursday, 12th September 2024 on Diamond Fm Ilorin.
Comrade Ishowo disclosed that he has been monitoring the activities of the chairman of the Federal Competition and Consumers Protection Commission [FCCPC], Mr Tunji Bello, for the past few months and commended him for a job well done.
He further stated that, he has seen reports where Mr Bello visited stores and has compared prices of commodities sold in Nigeria to the prices in U.S and United Kingdom, adding that the prices of goods in Nigeria is determined by rising and falling of crude oil.
‘’I’m afraid Mr Tunji Bello has a complicated issue at hand reason being what determines the Nigerian Economy is only crude oil and you cannot not really fathom how much how much someone spends in terms of transporting his goods from one place to another and that would be added to the prices of commodities that would be sold, notwithstanding that people are running different government in Nigeria, we have government of Bread sellers amongst others. They are independent and nobody seems to able to control them, they can just wake up and fix a price for their prices or services and if any members refuses to sell it the price fixed, he will be sanctioned. The government isn’t even sanctioning these organizations. I’m afraid the efforts of Mr Tunji Bello will not go in vain, he might run into complications.’’ Says Ishowo.
