A public affairs commentator, Comrade Tunji Aluu, has called on the Federal
Government to enact legislation that will protect women against discrimination and
intimidation in politics, while addressing religious and socio-cultural barriers limiting
their political representation.
Comrade Aluu made the call on Tuesday during a breakfast show
on Diamond
88.7 FM, Ilorin, where he highlighted the need for increased women’s participation
and representation in political leadership.
He identified gender-based intimidation, financial constraints and cultural stereotypes
as some of the major factors preventing women from participating actively in politics
and occupying key political positions.
Comrade Aluu further stressed that financial constraints is a major problem
restricting women to fight for major positions in politics, however limiting them to
cultural stereotype and institutions like girl child education, child mortality, and few
health unit.
He, however, maintained that corruption should not be viewed from a gender
perspective, stressing that neither men nor women should be considered inherently
free from corrupt practices.
Comrade Aluu therefore called for fairness, accountability and credible
representation across both genders, irrespective of the political positions they
occupy.
