A journalist and public affairs analyst, Mr. Ayo Abegunde, has called on the Nigeria’s government for the proper implementation of minimum wage laws to ensure wage stability in both the
public and private sectors.
Abegunde stated this on Tuesday while speaking on the Breakfast show at Diamond
88.7 Fm, Ilorin, said that an increase in the minimum wage ahead of the 2027 general
elections might not be realised until after elections, stressing that the government
could only initiate the process without completing it within the anticipated period.
He also warned that the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)’s demand for an increase in
the minimum wage could undermine the country’s micro-economic growth and trigger
a rise in the prices of goods in the general market.
According to him, NLC should channel their demand by positioning alternative
strategies to the Government rather than ground standing requests.
The analyst therefore stressed the need for effective implementation of existing
wage laws to promote stability across the public and private sectors.
