The Chairman of Ukwuani Local Government Council, Chiamaka Ajede, has dismissed claims that Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, ordered the arrest or removal of a serving councillor, Chukwuemeka Kenneth.

Ajede stated this in a statement on Tuesday while reacting to a trending video on social media alleging that the governor had imprisoned and removed the councillor from office.

He explained that the councillor’s suspension from council activities was an internal decision by his colleagues, while his detention was linked to a criminal case instituted by the police.

According to Ajede, the councillor had not been removed from office and remained a serving councillor despite his suspension.

Ajede reiterated that the governor had no role in the councillor’s detention.

“The governor did not imprison him. His detention is as a result of the case before the court. He is still a sitting councillor. He has only been suspended by his colleagues,” Ajede said.

Ajede explained that the suspension was imposed by the councillors over what they considered a contravention of the council’s code of conduct, stressing that it was separate from the criminal proceedings against Kenneth.

He said the criminal case followed statements allegedly made by the councillor during a live television programme on June 21, 2026, which were subsequently reported to the police.

“The issue was reported to the police, and the police investigated the matter before charging him before the Federal High Court sitting in Asaba,” Ajede said.

Ajede said the councillor pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him and subsequently applied for bail.

“He pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him, and an application for bail was made,” he said.

He added that the councillor remained in custody pending the court’s decision, stressing that his detention was not the same as his suspension from the council.

The chairman urged the public to disregard claims that Oborevwori ordered the councillor’s arrest or removal, stressing that the councillor’s suspension was an internal council matter, while his detention arose from the criminal proceedings before the court.
