The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has rejected the state police proposal, warning that the governors can abuse the outfit for both political and personal gains which can compromise human rights and national security.
The IG stated this at the national dialogue on state policing organized by the House of Representatives in Abuja, with the theme, ‘Pathways to Peace: Reimagining Policing in Nigeria.’
The Federal Government, however, insisted there was no going back on the initiative.
Vice President, Kashim Shetimma, who was also at the event, emphasized on the present administration’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for the establishment of state police across the country.
Recall that President Bola Tinubu and 36 state governors reached an agreement tackle the security crisis within the country in February.
Egbetokun, represented by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Ben Okolo, at the security summit, insisted that instead of state police, other security outfits should form a department under the Nigerian Police Force.
