Residents of Iloffa community in Oke-Ero Local Government Area of Kwara State have raised the alarm over the deplorable condition of the Omu-Aran-Iloffa-Eruku-Egbe-Kabba federal road, describing it as a death trap that has crippled economic and social activities in the area.
The Alofa of Iloffa, Oba Samuel Niyi Dada, said the road, characterised by deep potholes, gullies and muddy sections, has caused frequent vehicle breakdowns, increased transport fares and made movement difficult for residents.
He added that farmers are particularly affected, as difficulties in transporting farm produce to markets have resulted in significant losses and produce being left to rot.
The monarch also expressed concern that motorists are sometimes forced to use lonely forest routes to avoid the worst sections of the road, exposing travellers to security risks.
He said the 143-kilometre Ilorin-Egbe route, which previously took about two hours to navigate, now takes between seven and eight hours or, in some cases, an entire day.
He appealed to President Bola Tinubu, Works Minister David Umahi and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to urgently intervene.
