Jamaica has received its first group of third-country deportees from the United States, with 22 people arriving at Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston on Tuesday.
The move is part of a growing number of agreements under US President Donald Trump’s administration to deport non-citizens to countries other than their countries of origin.
Jamaica signed a memorandum of understanding with the US in June to accept the deportees, who are expected to be transferred to their home countries or other destinations.
The Jamaican government said the arrangement was intended as a transit measure, pledged not to accept deportees with criminal records and stated that the International Organization for Migration would support their care.It also said the arrangement would not be funded by the Jamaican government.
