Comrade Bashiru Oladipo, a public affairs expert, has expressed concern over the continuing security challenges in Kebbi State, describing it as “quite unfortunate that such things are still occurring.”
Speaking during a live broadcast, Oladipo emphasized the role of the police in maintaining peace, noting that “the police can only be effective when they have accurate information.” He urged residents to channel complaints and concerns through community leaders, saying, “complaints should come from the people in charge of the community.”
Oladipo also addressed recent remarks by a traditional ruler suggesting negotiations with bandits, warning that “you should not negotiate with a bandit; if negotiations are ongoing, then the people affected are not present.” He stressed that preventive action is key: “When you notice someone behaving suspiciously or a new member in the community, report it to your community head.”
Highlighting the importance of collaboration between government and traditional institutions, Oladipo recommended that the government find ways to strengthen the role of traditional rulers in security matters, granting them certain powers to help address insecurity effectively.
He further advised that the government provide adequate resources for the police to enhance their operational efficiency, adding that community vigilance and active engagement of traditional institutions are crucial in tackling security challenges.
