Kwara state government owes pensioners across the state over 57 billion naira gratuity as of May 2025.
The Kwara state commissioner of Finance Dr. Mrs Hauwa Nuru stated this on Tuesday during the quarterly inter-ministerial press briefing for quarter 3 held in Ilorin.
She disclosed that a total of 22.7 Billion gratuity is owing the state retirees while the local Government pensioners is been owing over 30 billion Naira.
She stated that the Malam Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq led administration does not owe any pensioners in the state the monthly pension. According to her, the backlog of gratuity to retirees is being paid gradually.
She opined that the current administration inherited over 19 billion arrears of local government pension gratuity and over 10 billion state retiree’s pension gratuity. According to her, the present administration in the state has paid 12 billion Naira local government pensioners gratuity.
In her words “ the past government paid local government pensioners gratitude to June 2009. The current government has paid it up to 2011 even as local government councils in the state already set aside 2.5 Billion to pay gratuity of local government pensioners for 2012 and 2013.
On the state retirees gratuity, Dr. Mrs. Nuru said the state government has approved 5.6 Billion Naira to clear backlog of pension gratuity up to 2016.
The other commissioners who gave their score card during the press briefing included, commissioner of transportation, solid minerals development, energy, Housing, solid Minerals, tertiary education among others.
In her welcome address the commissioner for communication Mrs Bolanle Olukoju who is the chairperson of the program said the inter-ministerial press briefing has bridged the communication gap between the government and the residents of the state.
she added that “This administration strongly believes that government must be accessible, responsive, and answerable to its people. The Interministerial Press Briefing, therefore, serves as a bridge between the government and the governed, ensuring that Kwarans are fully aware of the progress being made in every sector of the state’s development”
The quarterly inter-ministerial press briefing for the third quarter continues on Wednesday at the conference hall of the ministry of finance from 9am.
