The Kwara State government has urged residents of Kwara to embark on eco-friendly activities that will promote environmental conservation and economic empowerment which will in turn reduce deforestation and climate change.
This was disclosed on Friday, 29th November, 2024, by Governor AbdulRahman Abdulrazak, at the flag-off ceremony of the tree planting and launch of Eedu Ramoni – a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to charcoal made from organic raw materials – at the ACReSAL nursery site, Ijagbo community, Ọyun Local Government Area.
The governor who was ably represented by the commissioner for environment, Haijia Nafisat Buge, said the state government in partnership with the Universal Climate Initiative (UCI), and the Agro Climate Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), is actively embarking on the green initiative of planting 1,000 tree seedlings today as part of the 160,000 trees that will be planted in the state through this collaboration.
“We are actively participating in the planting of 160,000 trees that will be planted in the state through the partnership with Abral Development Initiative, and today’s exercise is therefore not just one of those many gathering but a gathering to sow the seeds of hope, sustainability, and environmental stewardship.” Said Governor Abdulrazak.
The governor further explained the importance of trees, noting that trees are vital in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity.
“Trees, as often described are the lungs of our planet, absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and provide habitat for countless species. Their importance cannot be overestimated. Each tree we plant today is therefore a step towards ensuring a healthier environment for generations yet unborn.”
While giving his welcome adress, Mr. Opeyemi AbdulHafiz Alao, the Chairman and President of Abral Development initiatives, as well as the convener of the Universal Climate Initiative said the initiative is no only targeted at tree planting, but it also seeks to introduce “Eedu Ramoni” – a clean and environmental friendly alternative to charcoal production using organic materials and waste such as orange peels, banana peels, corn husk, rice husk, and other biodegradable wastes. Mr. Alao added that the innovative product will help in reducing deforestation, promote clean and healthier environment, and enhance economic opportunities.
On his part, the state coordinator, Agro Climate Resilience in Semi Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL), Alh. Samsudeen Olatubosun Aregbe while appreciating the Onijagbo of Ijagbo land, HRH Oba Buhari Adeniyi, for providing ACReSAL with 5 hectares of land for planting 1000 exotic tree seedlings made it known that ACReSAL decided to participate in the green initiative because the mandate of the Universal Climate Initiative is in line with the project development objective of ACReSAL.
