Kwara LG Poll: We are ready to defeat APC, PDP, others says SDP

Ahead of the scheduled 21st September, 2024 local government election in Kwara State, the opposition Social Democratic Party, SDP has reiterated its commitment to emerge victorious. 

SDP’s Ilorin East Local Government Chairman, Chief Babatunde Kolawole Asanlu made the remark while featuring on Diamond FM, Ilorin, Kwara State News and Current Affairs programme, “E ba wa dasi” on Tuesday, 20th August, 2024.

According to Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, KWSIEC, five political parties are participating in the local government poll. 

They include the  Accord Party, AP,, Allied People’s Movement, APM, the Social Democratic Party, SDP, the People’s Democratic Party, PDP and the All Progressive Congress, APC.

Asanlu emphasized that the party has been in existence since 1989 and has produced a Governor in the State. 

“SDP has been in existence in the State for many years, we have produced a Governor before in the State”.

“Those people that joined the before prior to 2023 general election and left after the election left in their own accord, that didn’t affect the popularity of our Party”.

“The party is still opened to everybody to join”. 

He added that SDP is fielding credible and competent candidates in the election. 

“The party looked for good candidates that will implement the party manifestos, that is the reason we don’t have candidates in all local governments”. 

He furthered that the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC has hijacked some of the functions of the local government in the state.

“The state government is doing interlocking road but the Supreme Court judgment has enforced the local government autonomy which is our joy”. 

On the preparation of the State Electoral Commission, KWSIEC, he said those at the helms of affairs should be fair and allow the voice of the people to prevail.

“KWSIEC has been listening to our advices and observations, as at today, the Party has confidence in the capacity of the commission to give us credible election”.

While reacting on his plan for the people of Ilorin East Local Government area,  SDP Chairmanship candidate, Saleh Duro Garuba emphasized that his experience as a Transitional Interim Committee Chairman of the local government has prepared him for the office. 

“I have served my people as a TIC chairman, I constructed some roads, built primary health centers and bought tractors to encourage farmers”.

He added that  he gave business grants to some youths and people of the local government. 

“I gave business grants to some people in the local government, even some youths that are jobless were given little monthly upkeeps as support”.

Garuba bearared the administration of Governor Abudulraman Abdulrasaq for demolishing structures in the state without finding a new place for the people.

“In a sane society, before you demolish a structure, you must hold meetings by with affected people and find another place for them’.

“That was what Kaduna State Government did during El-rufai administration but this government compounded the hardship people are facing in the State”.
