The state Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge has charged Waste Management Consultants to be proactive at the discharge of their duties to the public, even as she inspects their operational vehicles, to ascertain its efficiency and durability.
The Commissioner gave the charge in Ilorin over the weekend, during the inspection, at the Ministry of Environment premises, GRA, Ilorin.
According to her: “Government will not treat the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse with kid gloves because, we can not shy away from our civic responsibilities and allow epidemics to take over the state. We as a Government are doing our best to totally eradicate indiscriminate dumping of refuse, in order to sustain a healthy environment across the State.”
Hon. Buge however enjoined waste Consultants to ensure that their vehicles are road worthy, to efficiently serve residents within Ilorin metropolis.
She again reiterated the commitment of the present administration, under the leadership of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, to eradicate indiscriminate dumping of refuse to sustain clean and safe environment, in the state and environs.
The Commissioner seized the opportunity to hint the public that, an Ilorin Magistrate Court yesterday (Saturday), sentenced another 14 members of the public to a 3-month jail term each, for violating Kwara State Environmental Law, making a total number of convicted persons within one week 75.
“This is an indication that government is resolute about putting a total stop to indiscriminate dumping of refuse, in Kwara State.”
The Commissioner however expressed satisfaction at the level of compliance, across the nooks and crannies of the metropolis, imploring members of the public to always abide by the state sanitation laws, with the aim of supporting government, to curb illegal dumping of refuse, road encroachment and scavenging within the metropolis, to ensure and sustain a clean and hygienic environment, for the betterment of every citizen of the state.
In his remark the Chairman Association of Waste Consultants, Alhaji ZakariyahuTahir commended the Commissioner for taking bold steps, to stop indiscriminate dumping of refuse, in order to sustain clean and safe environment, for a healthy living. He therefore reassured the state government of his Association’s support at all times, in its efforts to enforce environmental laws and sustain hygienic environment in the state.
