Mavo, the Nigerian singer, says he doesn’t feel pressured to become one of the leading faces of the country’s music scene.
Speaking during a listening session for his latest project, ‘Business’, the 22-year-old singer said he believes his emergence as a leading figure in Nigerian music should happen naturally, not through deliberate attempts to assume the position.
“Being the face of the Nigerian (music) scene is something that will come to me naturally. I have never tried to do more than I am meant to do. What is meant to be will be,” he said.
The singer also said he does not see his position within the new generation of Nigerian artistes as a responsibility.
“I have never felt any responsibility. Anything I am doing is what I am meant to do,” he added.
Mavo also spoke about the spiritual inspiration behind some of the songs on Business, saying he dedicated them to God as a way of expressing gratitude for his rise.
Released in July, ‘Business’ is Mavo’s latest project and features collaborations with artists including AJ Tracey and SSSoundGawd.
“The song about God just felt like I needed to appreciate God for what He had done for me. God put me in a place that He didn’t put a lot of people in,” he said.
“He made me understand not just music but the music business, and I needed to appreciate Him for that. That’s why I dedicated some songs to Him.”
