- … condemns recent killing of student, in Ilorin, as investigation is underway
The stance of authorities with respect to the ban in operations of commercial motorcycles and tricycles from 9pm- 6a.m was re-echoed today in Ilorin, the Kwara State Capital.
The Police Public Relation’s Officer (PPRO)-Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, while featuring on Monday’s (11th November, 2024) episode of the Diamond Breakfast Show- a flagship program of Diamond88.7FM, Ilorin, drew the attention of the public to the existing ban, calling for co-operation for peace and safety of all in Kwara State.
“Let me remind the public of the ban in movement of motorcycle and tricycle operators in kwara. The restriction has been on because most crimes are committed at night with the use of motorcycles and tricycles,” says the PPRO
She maintained that the daily ban from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. is necessary to curtail crime and insecurity in Kwara State.
The Police Spokeswoman in Kwara also condemned and described as unprofessional the actions of three officers leading to the death of an ex-University student Suleiman Olayinka.
Recall that twenty-seven-year-old Olayinka was allegedly killed by policemen on Tuesday (5th November, 2024) around 2:00 pm in the Tanke area of Ilorin, with the police confirming the detention of 3 officers connected to the incident.
“No one should experience such brutality. We will investigate thoroughly, and those found guilty will face consequences.” She highlighted the importance of regular training and weekly orientations conducted by DPOs to reinforce appropriate conduct among officers.
Ejire-Adeyemi also urged the public to avoid arguments with armed individuals, including police officers, for their safety.
She said, “If approached, remain calm and do not resist, even if innocent, contact your lawyer and handle matters to the station. The police is still your friend but maintaining composure is vital while interacting with a man that is armed with a gun”.
