President Bola Tinubu has previously instructed the Senate to approve Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as the significant Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN. This was read in a letter by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a meeting earlier today.

Justice Kekere-Ekun has been standing in as the CJN since August after Justice Olukayode Ariwoola’s retreat. Prior to this, president Tinubu had sworn her into office for the time being.

In his letter, Tinubu referred to Section 231(1) of the Nigerian Constitution, which gave the President the power to choose the CJN upon suggestions from the National Judicial Council, NJC, subject to Senate confirmation.

The President showed faith in Kekere-Ekun and encouraged the Senate to act accordingly. Akpabio spoke of the nomination to the whole committee for consideration, which is expected to hold tomorrow, 25th September 2024.
