A United Nations-led organization has pledged support of almost six hundred and thirty million dollars for Ethiopia’s humanitarian crisis, which is still short of the one billion dollars needed to help feed and support millions of people facing conflict and climate change in Africa’s second most populous country.
The donors also called on the Ethiopian government to ensure that the aid is delivered to those in need, without interference. Recall that last year, the United States Agency for International Development suspended all food aid to Ethiopia for several months, after an internal investigation discovered that donated food intended for millions of hungry people were being diverted on a widespread
scale.
Ethiopia faces a number of conflicts. The two-year conflict in the northern Tigray region, which ended with a peace deal in November 2022, left most of the region’s population of 6 million relying on humanitarian assistance. Donors however urged Ethiopia to ensure the full implementation of the peace agreement and peacefully resolve ongoing conflicts in its Amhara and Oromia regions.
